Business Trends: HPI construction: Capital expenditures remain above $1.8 T
As the hydrocarbon processing industry (HPI) nears the middle of 2019, Hydrocarbon Processing is providing an assessment of the global midstream/downstream processing industries’ capital investments.
Africa: Financing Africa’s petrochemical projects
The financing of Africa’s petrochemicals industry expansion remains a key issue for a continent on which governments and the private sector are grappling with an infrastructure financing deficit of $130 B–$170 B, despite some investors having found options to fund their petrochemical projects.
Coke drum and blowdown system overpressure protection design—Part 2
The blowdown (BD) system in delayed coking units (DCUs) receives waste streams generated during the coke drum (CD) decoking process to recover valuable hydrocarbons and water.
Viewpoint: Downstream expansions will accelerate needed production growth
Two transformative drivers—global economic growth averaging more than 3%/yr and the world population expanding to more than 9 B by 2040—will have the net effect of adding another India and China to today’s global energy demand.
Asia: Japanese refining moves towards consolidation and increased efficiency
According to recent statements of leading Japanese analysts in the field of refining and the country’s largest producers, the Japanese refining industry is moving towards consolidation and an increase in efficiency.
Editorial Comment: Where some see roadblocks, we see opportunities
In the January issue of Hydrocarbon Processing, the editorial comment focused on the roadmap to advancing ideas.
Global Project Data
Hydrocarbon Processing’s Construction Boxscore Database is tracking nearly 1,300 projects around the world.
Comparative analyses of common project execution alternatives
With major projects (FIG. 1), alternatives are generally considered in overall project execution and in construction.
Coke drum and blowdown system overpressure protection design - Part 1
The blowdown (BD) system in delayed coking units (DCUs) receives waste streams generated during the coke drum (CD) decoking process to recover valuable hydrocarbons and water. In recent DCU designs, the CD pressure relief valves (PRVs) also discharge to this system and then to the flare system via the BD PRVs.
Innovations
Engineers tasked with finding a green solution to waste gas emissions from hydrocarbon storage tanks during loading and unloading operations will find that the ST100 series thermal flowmeter from Fluid Components International (FCI) supports tank vapor recovery systems, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
