API sees falling US demand for gasoline, distillates
Demand for gasoline dropped 2% from a year earlier, to 8.572 million bpd, the API said. The nine-month average demand of 8.73 million bpd was down 0.7% from the same time in 2011. September demand for distillate fuel (heating oil/diesel) was 4% below the year-earlier level, at 3.777 million bpd.
Murphy Oil to spin off US downstream business
Murphy Oil on Tuesday said it expects to complete the spinoff of Murphy USA in 2013. California switches to winter gasoline to ease cost
The shortages underscore California's relative isolation from the rest of the nation in terms of energy. The state is the largest fuel market in the nation, but its strict production rules make importing gasoline from other areas difficult; and there are no fuel pipelines connecting it to markets across the Rocky Mountains.
Valero suspends spot gasoline sales in California
Valero, the largest US refiner, took the unusual step after a series of shutdowns at Richmond and other refineries. Valero said it will meet its current contracts to supply gasoline, but won't sell into the spot market. Spokesman Bill Day said resumption of spot sales "will depend on markets and inventories."
