Novamont, Genomatica form Europe JV for bio-BDO
Genomatica and Novamont have signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture that is expected to lead to the first industrial plants in Europe producing butanediol (BDO) from renewable feedstocks.
US invests $510m on military, commercial biofuels
President Barack Obama announced that the US Departments of Agriculture, Energy and Navy will invest up to $510 million during the next three years in partnership with the private sector to produce advanced drop-in aviation and marine biofuels to power military and commercial transportation.

Archer Daniels Midland to buy Polish biodiesel, rapeseed oil firm Elstar
Global agribusiness major Archer Daniels Midland expanded its oilseed processing, food manufacturing and biodiesel capabilities by agreeing to buy a majority share of Elstar Oils S.A. A Warsaw-listed company, Elstar is a leading Polish manufacturer of quality refined vegetable oils and fats for the food industry, and biodiesel for the energy market.
OriginOil receives new order from MBD Energy for algae-to-oil system
OriginOil, the developer of a technology to extract oil from algae, said it recently received an increased order for a large-scale algae extraction system from MBD Energy, a leading solutions provider in the field of industrial CO2 waste management.
Solazyme, Bunge JV plots Brazil renewable oil plant
US-based renewable oil and bioproducts company Solazyme has entered into a framework agreement with agribusiness firm Bunge for a joint venture focused on the production of triglyceride oils in Brazil. The venture anticipates building a 100,000 tpy renewable oil production facility located at a Bunge owned sugar cane mill in Brazil, it said.
Amyris partners with Kuraray for development of renewable polymers
Renewable products firm Amyris has signed a collaboration agreement with Kuraray to develop innovative polymers from Biofene, a renewable hydrocarbon building block made using Amyris technology. Under the agreement, Kuraray will use Biofene to replace petroleum-derived feedstock such as butadiene and isoprene in the production of specified classes of high-performing polymers.
Biofuels firm Gevo to build isobutanol processing demonstration plant in Texas
Renewable chemicals and advanced biofuels firm Gevo will work with a subsidiary of the Arabian American Development Co. to build a hydrocarbon processing demonstration plant at their facility just outside of Houston in Silsbee, Texas.
Süd-Chemie starts work to build cellulosic ethanol plant in Germany
Specialty chemicals firm Süd-Chemie has begun construction at Straubing in southern Germany of a €28mn plant to produce cellulosic ethanol from agricultural waste materials.
Bioenergy group Terrabon awarded jet fuel project for US defense agency
Houston-based bioenergy company Terrabon has been awarded a $9.6 million, 18-month contract by Logos Technologies to design a more economical and renewable jet fuel (BioJet) production solution for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
