Vietnam to shift to E5/E10 biofuels in June

  • Vietnam will officially transition to the use of E5 and E10 biofuels from June 1 this year.

Vietnam will officially shift to E5 and E10 biofuels nationwide from June 1, following a long-prepared government roadmap aimed at promoting sustainable development and environmental protection. Authorities say the transition is ready in terms of legal groundwork, technical infrastructure and broad support from businesses.

At a fuel supply and management conference hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Lê Ngọc Hùng of the Ministry of Science and Technology said the Government has established the necessary conditions to introduce E10 fuel on schedule. Major fuel distributors have also prepared: Petrolimex has nearly completed required upgrades, while PVOIL has largely met technical standards, supporting supply reliability and fuel quality once the rollout begins.

Despite this progress, authorities acknowledge remaining gaps in standards and technical regulations, particularly those governing storage facilities and infrastructure in the petroleum sector. As the MST drafts a new Law on Product Quality, closer coordination among ministries, sectors and local governments is needed to finalize regulations and ensure a stable, transparent and safe fuel market. Regular inspection and supervision were also highlighted as ongoing priorities.

Biofuel adoption is expected to deliver clear environmental benefits while also supporting the domestic biofuel industry, creating jobs and contributing to broader socio-economic development. In late 2025, the MST conducted working missions with major fuel companies to review implementation of Decision 53/2012/QD-TTg and gather feedback; most businesses expressed support for the policy.

According to Phạm Thành Trung of the MoIT’s Legal Department, a new decree on petroleum trading is in its final consultation stage before submission to the Government. With coordinated policy preparation, infrastructure readiness and strong business participation, the June 1 transition is expected to be a significant milestone, steering Việt Nam’s fuel market toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
