Stantec partners with FuelPositive on launch of Canada’s first farmer-owned green ammonia system

  • Helping reduce agricultural emissions
  • Driving economical, sustainable solutions for on-farm nitrogen fertilizer and fuel

Stantec, a global leader in sustainable design and engineering, is providing technical advisory services for FuelPositive Corp.’s first demonstration system, the FP300. Located in Sperling, Manitoba, Canada, the system is designed to produce 100 metric tpy of green ammonia. It serves as the model for the company’s next-generation system, the FP1500, built to support farms of approximately 10,000 acres. In anticipation of growing demand, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is being planned.

Stantec assisted FuelPositive with obtaining the required approvals from Manitoba’s Inspection and Technical Services division for pressure vessels and the Manitoba Environment and Climate Change department.

With the utility grid connection already in place, Stantec is also supporting FuelPositive in completing hazardous area certification via an independent inspection agency. This serves as the final requirement before the company’s first decentralized, farmer-owned green ammonia system can be powered on.

Increasing green ammonia production capacity. The FP300 system will operate on Manitoba’s hydroelectric grid to produce green ammonia fertilizer and fuel, offering a scalable, on-farm alternative to traditional, fossil-fuel-intensive fertilizer. This innovative technology reduces emissions associated with fertilizer production and long-distance distribution while still delivering the essential nitrogen farmers depend on.

“Partnering with FuelPositive on this demonstration project exemplifies our commitment to advancing decarbonization in industrial applications,” said Ameya Bhandarkar, Industrial Buildings lead at Stantec. “We’re proud to be part of their vision and support this important project through commissioning, startup, and beyond.”

As a Canadian cleantech company, FuelPositive is committed to empowering farmers with tools that increase independence, lower input costs and enable the adoption of cleaner and more resilient technologies.

“Collaborating with Stantec marks a pivotal step for FuelPositive at this critical stage of our journey,” said Ian Clifford, co-founder, chair, and CEO of FuelPositive. “Stantec’s global leadership in sustainable engineering, combined with deep expertise in industrial buildings, manufacturing and clean tech, aligns perfectly with our mission to deliver economically viable solutions for agriculture now.”
