Solvay, Veolia inaugurate new unit for recycling industrial flue gas treatment residues in Meurthe-et-Moselle, France
Veolia and Solvay, via their subsidiary Resolest, a specialist in the recycling of industrial flue gas treatment residues, have inaugurated a new unit increasing capacity of the Rosières-aux-Salines site in Meurthe-et-Moselle (54).
In line with the momentum initiated in 2024, this operation marks a major step in Resolest's development, which will be able to process and recover up to 50% more flue gas treatment residues per year.
Committed for > 20 yr to building a more sustainable and circular industry at a regional level, the Rosières-aux-Salines site recovers the salt contained in the flue gas treatment residues obtained after the use of sodium bicarbonate. The salt is extracted in the form of purified brine, which then enters into the production of sodium carbonate by Solvay Dombasle's facilities in France. Through this virtuous local loop, based on the innovation and know-how of Solvay and Veolia, waste is transformed into alternative resources, thereby enabling the preservation of natural materials.
The inauguration ceremony for this new unit took place with the support of Senator Jean-François Husson, and in the presence of MP Thibault Bazin; Mr. Philippe Jonquet, Mayor of Rosières-aux-Salines; Mr. David Fischer, President of the Syndicat Sel et Vermois and Mayor of Dombasle-sur-Meurthe; Mr. Jean-François Nogrette, Director of Veolia France Zone and Special Waste Europe; Mr. Jean-Michel Frada, Director of Resolest; and Mr. Étienne Galan, President of Solvay Soda Ash & Derivatives, as well as institutional, industrial and academic partners.
"For more than twenty years, Resolest has been a pioneer in the valorization of material from residues deemed non-valorizable. With this extension, we are reinforcing our ability to produce reusable industrial salts, and to actively contribute to the preservation of natural resources," stated Jean-Michel Frada, Directeur de Resolest.
"At Solvay, we firmly believe in the potential of the circular economy for a more sustainable future. The expansion of Resolest, in partnership with Veolia, is tangible proof of this commitment and our desire to transform challenges into opportunities" commented Etienne Galan, President of Solvay Soda Ash & Derivatives.
"The circular industry that we are helping to build every day alongside our partners, and notably Solvay, here in the Grand Est region, is not just a response to environmental challenges; it is a promise of innovation and efficiency where every solution is designed to create new resources and sustainable value for our customers and for the territories. It is a guarantee of competitiveness and sovereignty, for which Veolia now deploys all its expertise," added Jean-François Nogrette, Director of Veolia Zone France and Special Waste Europe.
